Hidden Photographer Prices?
Our take
Hi! I came here to ask if this is normal and maybe I'm just misinformed:
I recently just did a grad photo session with a friend, everything went well, our images were back within a few days. My friend's Mom paid for the session (which I was not aware was $600 for ONE hour, already pricey but whatever). I get onto the gallery and most of the photos are great, but they have this HUGE watermark on them. I thought it would just be there until the download, so I went to try to download some. Come to find out, you have to PAY to download.... after you already paid for the session? It cost $30 PER digital download and $350 if I want the whole gallery. At this rate its just cheaper for me to buy physical prints and scan them in.
Am I wrong for feeling like this is a bit scammy?? Would it be horrible of me to put a review about this? Because after looking at her website, I saw nothing mentioned upfront. Additionally, one of the photos was clearly edited with AI. We were in a busy college gateway, so some people had to be edited out of the back. Suddenly after editing the people out, the walkway changed from bricks to concrete, and there is a building by one of the pillars that doesn't continue onto the next pillar. It just looked sloppy.
I just feel like having a $600 ONE hour session plus a few poorly edited photos AND charging $30 PER digital download is crazy. I feel very off put by this photographer.

- Is this normal for a specialized photography studio?Hi! I don’t know if there’s a better subreddit for this but I wanted some insight before I write a Google review of this specific business …just in case I am simply uninformed on how photoshoots go or something. Last summer, I wanted to have a retro, pin up birthday photoshoot at Chicago Pin Up Photography (located in Indiana, they moved away from the city to have a bigger studio space). They specialize in pin up makeup, hairstyling and posing so I read a few reviews, saw that they were well versed in working with my hair type, and was excited to book! I was told during my phone consultation when I booked my shoot that it would “start at $999” for the final edited picture package so that’s what I saved up for. I get there, do the photoshoot, and everything goes well for the most part. Then, I get the email about my package. The lowest tier for the least amount of photos is $1,599 for 6 photos.… By this point, I have already done the photo shoot so I just want to pay them for their work and finally get my photos. I get on the Zoom meeting to go over my final photos with a pit in my stomach. At the end of the meeting, I ask if there’s any other payment options available to which she replied “no ❤️” on our Zoom chat (her laptop audio wasn’t working) . I nervously laughed (I assumed she was trying to be witty or cheeky since that’s a big part of their brand) and we ended the meeting cordially. I signed up for the next tier up (because I loved my pictures so much and couldn’t decide on just 6... so I picked 12). Then I had to track them down after I finished paying my payment plan. I waited 2 additional weeks after the 2-3 weeks they say it should take in their Investment Guide (since I remembered the photographer/editor saying she’s very busy and has multiple projects going on). I was really excited to hear back from the company and see what my final edited photos looked like and to see my photo album. Then I emailed, called, and texted them multiple times to no response until eventually I got the idea to reach out via Facebook Messenger since they don’t use Instagram much and they responded quickly. If I already paid you, I should then receive my product in 2-3 weeks like it says in your guide. If you aren’t able to get it to me in time, at least let me know! I’m pretty angry and disappointed by the whole experience and I don’t know how to condense all this into a Google review or if they even deserve my time and energy anymore . Is this a normal thing ? Edit: At the end of the photoshoot, they had me choose a fabric to go on the spine and the photographer said that I’d receive a physical photo album of my pictures along with the digital images. I got the album in the mail today and it’s …black. No fabric spine or anything. submitted by /u/Due-Reflection-6937 [link] [comments]
- Is it an industry standard to have to pay XYZ amount before getting digital photos? My husband and I won a $200 photography gift card in a local charity contest- the gift card says it’s for a session and a single 5x7 print photo. I started to set things up with the photographer, and found out that unless we invest $600 with him, he will not give any digital copies. Make no mistake here- this is a small, 45 minute family photo session, I am not *ever* thinking I’m getting 30 digital retouched photos for that! I admit I *did* assume we’d get just 3 to 5 digital copies of our favorite photos, plus the single print, from all this. I asked him if even giving him $100 for 3 digital photos worked for him, and he said no, he says he wants people to have coffee table albums and framed photos and other prints. He sent me his price list which does indeed say you have to invest $600 with him before getting access to any digital photos. I’ve had lots of family photos done in the past, and of course our wedding photos a few years ago, and I haven’t ever come across this before, even for the “mini shoots” of couples and pets. Yes it’s a free $200 photoshoot, however, it’s a fair bit of work to coordinate to get our kid and dog ready etc for a single 5x7 print, because we certainly don’t have $400 to throw at this right now. I suppose I understand his take on it, but it feels a bit much for him to give out photoshoot gift cards to a charity for people to win, but they only get a single 5x7 print out of it. Is this a new industry standard that I wasn’t aware of until now? submitted by /u/LostAsparagus5 [link] [comments]
- First bad reviewHopefully this is allowed here! But I need some advice. I did a senior photoshoot yesterday and sent them 10 images this morning. They hated them and started to pick apart the images and asking me to photoshop a bunch of different things. They also asked how many images they’d receive and I said 50-75 for the hour session and they were disappointed with that number. I’ve been shooting for 6 years and have never received a bad review. Do I refund them ? (It was a very, discounted session) do I edit them the best I can and just call it a day? I’m really at a loss and feeling defeated. submitted by /u/Honest_monkey2746 [link] [comments]
- Photographer took unflattering photosJust wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I recently hired a photographer (I’m a photographer myself and I photograph weddings and content shoots). I love this photographers style and how they edit and the photos. The photos themselves objectively are not bad however I do genuinely feel like a portrait photographers job is to capture their subjects looking their best, work out their best angles and to take loads of photos in order to have plenty to choose from and options to replace photos their client isn’t happy with. I felt like my shoot was an after thought, when I first spoke with this photographer I showed him a load of inspiration in terms of angles and poses as I trusted the editing style but I wanted him to capture the energy I was after. He arrived with no shot list and it felt like he kind of winged it, we were on location bouncing around all day and he was asking me questions throughout the whole process and capturing really ugly shots of me talking (I assume in an effort to make me more relaxed? But it makes the shots look terrible) I love a candid but I think a mid conversation candid is a no no for a shoot tbh. He sent me the raws to choose from and there wasn’t that much to choose from so I settled for what I could hoping the edit might make me feel better about them. But to be honest with you, I feel like they’re don’t capture me looking my best at all and even the edit feels rushed and not carefully done and I feel like he just hasn’t done a good job. Does anyone else agree that as a portrait photographer he should at-least direct me a bit and help me find my best angles? That’s what I do almost every shoot I do, and the fact he didn’t arrive with any kind of shot list I just feel like he ignored my brief totally. Is it fair for me to ask for a reshoot in this situation? submitted by /u/Optimal-Rock-988 [link] [comments]
