Transitioning from commercial (Nike + other brands) to editorial.
Our take

| Hey everyone, I’m a model based in Portland, Oregon and I’ve been modeling for about 3 years now. Most of my work has been on the commercial/sportswear side, I’ve worked consistently with Nike (including being featured on the front page of Nike.com), and have also modeled for other brands as well. I’ve also auditioned or done self-tapes for brands like Adidas and The North Face. Lately, I’ve been trying to transition more into editorial/high-fashion work. I’ve started doing more test shoots in that direction, experimenting with a more androgynous / feminine-masculine look inspired by Prince, and pushing more creative styling and posing. My agency contract is also ending in about 2 months, so I’m trying to figure out my next steps and whether I should be targeting agencies/markets that lean more editorial. I’d really appreciate honest feedback on: - Do I have a look that can translate into editorial/high fashion? - What would I need to improve or refine to break more into that space? - Should I be focusing on digitals, more test shoots, or trying to get in front of specific agencies? I’ve attached a few recent images from a test shoot to show the direction I’m going in. Appreciate any real feedback or advice, trying to level up and be intentional with my next move. - New to modeling! Honest advice appreciatedHello all! Im brand new to the industry. I recently submitted my digitals to a few agencies and heard back from 3 so far. Currently in the process of meeting with them for representation. Ideally, I would like to make a career out of this. I’m not just pursuing it as a hobby. But I also want to be realistic. If anyone has any insight in this industry, would you see my “look” as more commercial or high fashion? - What is the modeling industry like in 2026?Hi! I'm a professional photographer who's worked with a lot of high profile clients (Jay Z, Versace, a few royal families, etc.) Roughly 15 years ago I worked as a production assistant on shoots doing castings with a few agencies such as Ford, Wilhelmina, etc. I have a friend who models for brands like Jordan, Nike, NBA etc. He's also done a lot of commercials as well and has done all this without an agency. I feel a little out of touch to give him advice because when I was in the industry, casting calls were a thing. I remember the girls walking through NY with their books and waiting in line at these agencies but it's my understanding everything is digital now. With his experience with big brands would you recommend he go the agency route or keep doing what he's currently doing? From what I can tell, a lot of agencies have websites to submit your info, but nothing really to submit your portfolio. So how would someone with a lot of experience with major brands showcase this? submitted by /u/flt_p2ny [link] [comments]
- New to Modelling. Seeking advice and feedback.Helloo everyone, I’m 25 and based in Brisbane Australia, and fairly new to modelling. I’ve been building my portfolio through test shoots and am currently trying to get signed with an agency. I’ve attached some of my images and would love to hear your thoughts. I’m interested in both commercial and editorial, and trying to get a better sense of my potential in these areas and how I can position myself. I haven’t had much success with agency applications so far, I’m not sure if because of my age or my look, so any insight on what I could improve or how I can better stand out would be really helpful. I’m taking digitals next week as well so any tips there would be great. I know this sub is mostly US-based, but I’d really appreciate any feedback regardless. Measurements: 5’9.7 33–26–34 Thanks in advance 🙂 submitted by /u/angel-annie [link] [comments]
- Moving to Chicago in pursuit of modelingHowdy there! Next week I am moving to Chicago to continue pursuing modeling. (Currently live in Wichita Kansas). I’ve done research on the agencies there. I am going to take fresh digitals upon arrival and begin submitting again. I see there are regular open calls for agencies which I will be attending. I’ll be attending the Chicago does the met a few days after I arrive which I understand to be a great networking event. And I have a test shoot lined up for when I move. I plan to sign up to some of the online resources like casting network and backstage. I’m comfortable spending some more time developing my look and portfolio. However, I am absolutely in pursuit of getting signed and building revenue from my modeling. I know the city offers a lot more opportunities for these kinds of things. I will be networking irl and via social media to make connections with photographers/stylists as I’m already doing. Hoping to build a strong enough portfolio that I start getting reached out to for work even aside from being signed. I plan to continue looking for work from the networks, insta, facebook ect that can lead to revenue. All in all I ask- what should I be focusing my attention towards upon arrival? I figure attending casting calls, networking, submitting are really good starts. I have been modeling now for four months while working my full time job in Wichita. In Chicago I’ll be taking a large pay raise and not gang to work forty hours a week which will surely allow some more time to full with these pursuits. I’ve begun to understand myself a lot more as a model recently and refine my skills. I also understand the industry tends to let you know what you do and do not have. I am making this move with purpose but at the same time I feel there’s only so much one can glean from research and other models from social media. I practice, I have been doing test shoots here (quality photographers wi yr vision are hard to come by). I’ve been developing my own pitch decks and want to purchase a camera so I can begin to bring those to life on my own. All in all- yeah. I want this, I’m working for it and I want to amp it up in order to match the opportunity the city has to offer. ANY advice, notes, pointers ect are welcomed. I aim towards a career as an androgynous model. I’d love to work commercially but I really strive to work in editorial. My biggest dream is to model androgynous/ womens wear on the runway. My instagram is tjmccloudjr. By the time I’ve moved I’ve had shot multiple editorials with reputable photographers, auditioned for a runway show in Kansas City and worked on a large set for a designer in STL. It’s been a crazy four months but BY GOD I want to take it up a notch! Attached is just a reference photo of myself in a gown in a dressing room, just for specs on my ability to model women’s/androgynous clothes as far as body and image are concerned. I have breast tissue and I love it. I plan to scale back the arm/shoulder exercise and bump up the booty a bit. I have a 28 in waist and my hips and chest are both 38 in. I’m 5’11. I’ll also attach some other photos for good measure. Some of it was already a couple months ago so somewhat dated. submitted by /u/Educational_Dream586 [link] [comments]
