Ugh just deleted a ton of RAWs being careless. I blame MacOS lol.

Our take

In a moment of careless oversight, a photographer faced the frustration of accidentally deleting a significant number of RAW files while managing memory cards. While partially blaming MacOS for not clearing cards until the trash is emptied, they acknowledged the importance of double-checking file transfers before deleting images. Fortunately, a recent switch to a dual memory card camera allowed for HEIF backups, providing a safety net against total loss.

Kind of blame MacOS but it's definitely my fault for not double checking I had everything copied before clearing the memory cards. From what I understand, MacOS doesn't clear the memory on the cards unless you empty the trash. So I copy photos over, delete from card, and then empty trash so I have full space in my cards next shoot. Well I 90% of my RAWs didn't copy over, and I didn't notice until it was too late.

I just switched to a dual memory card camera a couple weeks ago and use slot 2 for HEIF backups so not all is lost. Thankful I got that setup otherwise I'd be completely fucked lol.

Lesson learned, and I'll be making changes to my process going forward.

A PSA for backing up your photos + my new backup strategyI lost my main portable hard drive on a plane. When I got home, I realized my backup on a big hard drive included the Lightroom catalog but not the raw files. Fortunately, I use Amazon Photos (free for Prime users in the U.S.) to back up everything to the cloud, and that included the raws. My new strategy: Portable Samsung Solid State Drive (SSD) in my backpack Get the T7, not the T7 Shield, which includes a rubberized surface. Use a label maker to put your contact info on the drive, which won't stick to the rubberized surface. Get an AirTag and something like the TagVault mount that will stick to the drive.
