Is 500px still worth it in 2026? Or nah?
Our take
In 2026, the question of whether 500px remains a valuable platform for photographers is more relevant than ever. As you navigate your options, it’s essential to understand what each platform offers. With Flickr's legacy status and Behance's designer focus, 500px presents itself as a photo-centric space, promising a cleaner feed, opportunities for discovery, and engaging challenges. However, mixed reviews may leave you wondering about its current community dynamics and the quality of its contests.
Hey,
I’m trying to find a solid place to post my photos, get real feedback (not just likes), find inspo and maybe join some legit photo challenges.
Right now I’m looking at:
- Flickr – used it years ago. Still alive but feels kinda legacy? Not sure how active it is now.
- Behance – looks polished but more for designers than photographers?
- 500px – seems like what I want: photo-focused, cleaner feed, discovery and challenges. Feels like a “modern Flickr”?
But I keep seeing mixed (sometimes bad) takes on 500px though most of those posts are pretty old.
So what’s the real deal now in 2026?
- Is 500px still worth using?
- Is the community active / helpful?
- Are the contests actually good or just fluff?
Bonus: If none of these are it where are photographers actually hanging out today for feedback + growth?

- Where can I submit my photos for online competitions?Need a sanity check on where people submit photos for online photo competitions now, because searching this stuff manually is kind of awful. Half the sites I found look like they haven’t been updated in years, and the other half make it weirdly hard to tell what happens to your images after upload. I’m not chasing fame or anything, I just want a few decent places to test my work, get a read on what holds up, and maybe stop overthinking which shots are “good enough” to enter. I already print some stuff and share a little online, but photo competitions feel like a different muscle and I’m not sure where to start without wasting time. I’d rather hear from people who’ve actually entered instead of digging through random lists. Do you mostly go for big competitions, smaller recurring ones, or community-based photo competitions? - Where are the flickr bros?Back in 2008-2010 I was big into photography, not very good at it and rather poor. Everyone was raving over the d700, flickr was a great place, blah blah Now I have money so I bought a d700 in great condition and a tamron 35mm 1.4 prime (the big heavy one)... it seems flickr is dead? I don't use FB/instagram etc because it's just full of onlyfan bots, especially instagram. Where is everyone? Have people given up on photography or something? - Do people still get gigs/their photos featured on publications through Flickr?I used to be really active on Flickr from like 2012 to 2016. Some of my photos somehow got used by a lot of websites including Vice News and even a local publication in my city ended up hiring me as a freelance photographer. Later on a local corporate company also found me through flickr and also ended up hiring me. Someone also contacted me to use one of my photos in their book. I also saw a food truck using one of my photos for their business without any compensation to me of course. I even got a lot of my work stolen by musicians I followed and would every now and then end up on my instagram feed despite me getting no credit for said photos.... Even worse, a lot of the times the content farms that would steal my photos would get the credit for the photos instead of me... actually, that was kinda the reason I rage quit photography cause I was tired of my work getting stolen and me being blocked by content farm accounts whenever I asked for credit. I tried a website called I think it was pixys? they would look through the internet and supposed to help me get credit for photos or photos taken down but that never happened despite hundreds of matches... Any who, story for another day I guess. I stopped doing photography around 2017 except for a couple gigs from friends and family. I've since bought a new mirrorless camera 2 years ago and a film camera a year ago which made me fall in love with photography again. I've realized that nothing has come from me not posting my work or rarely posting my work online. I guess having your work stolen just comes with the job... but on the positive side, at least people like my work enough for them to steal it. On top of that I feel my work has improved a lot compared of how I used to shoot 10 years ago. Now, we know instagram is pretty much dead for photography (kinda always has been for me) and I see people kinda showing interest on Flickr again which is cool in itself BUT I was wondering if people still get hit up by publications, magazines, books, brands, websites and what not for their work on Flickr? I don't know if direct messages are still a thing on flickr but I would also get inquiries through the email I had on there so I am wondering if anyone on here has gotten their work discovered through Flickr? submitted by /u/chano_banano [link] [comments]
